As we have done in the past, this week we lay to rest a
fellow Marine, a friend, a hero.
Joe Ulloa was a friend
to all and a great supporter and member of our Detachment.
Joe served during the Korean War and was awarded for bravery
the Silver Star and Bronze Star. At Joe’s wake today the
family had displayed a shadow box of Joe’s medals and among
the Stars and various ribbons were three Purple Hearts.
Robert Ulloa calmly stated about his brother, “He was hit a
fourth time but hasn’t yet received a Purple Heart for that
one.” God love you Robert!
Joe, dressed in his MCL dress uniform, lay in a USMC
casket draped beautifully with the American Flag. To the
left of the pristine Eagle, Globe, and Anchor on the lid of
the casket was our Lord Jesus on His cross. Amongst the Red,
White, and Blue; brass, mahogany, and white lace, Joe lay in
a restful peace looking every bit the hero and gentleman
that he is. As the family gathered around Joe to
pray, and me having just come from work and forgetting to
silence my cell phone; the silence of prayer was broken with
the loud playing of the Marine Hymn. (as you know that is my
cell phone ring tone) Oh my God, how embarrassing, but
how appropriate to have our Marine Hymn play, along with
Joe, his uniform, his medals, and his loved ones at that
exact moment.

Joe was a Charter member, and also a Commandant of
this San Jose Detachment back 50 years ago. Here’s Joe at
our Charter celebration (2003) along with our fallen brother
Mike Marte.

Joe made just about every meeting to be with his
fellow Marines. I fondly remember the many stories that Joe
would tell me during our events.

Here’s Joe and his brother Robert. Brother Marines
and brothers by blood. Robert and Joe are God’s finest
example of family and the bonds that hold us strong.

Joe loved our parades and enjoyed riding in the
HMMWV.

Joe, we will all miss you at the meetings and our events.
Please keep the coffee warm until we meet again, and keep
your eye on us as we stumble gallantly through this life.
Semper Fidelis, Kevin Kimma
