In memory of our beloved Marine Hero - Colonel Lealon "Lee" Wimpee

Colonel Wimpee has passed away on 21 July 2008

Lealon was a hero Marine, fine man, beloved husband, loving father, and a great friend to all

God will certainly Bless our Colonel

From Joe Dyer: I would go through any dangerous situation with a man of his caliber. When you are in service you are never sure of the character of the officers in command, until you are in an extreme situation. My Captain had that calm self assured quality that men sensed and we performed to his standard of excellence. The Marines mold  men, but they didn't need much effort in Colonel Wimpee's case. Those qualities were inherent in him. All he required was a little fine tuning. There should be no doubt in anyone's mind of my loyalty and respect for this outstanding man. Our motto "Semper Fidelis" epitomized this man and what more could anyone ask of him. In everyone's life there there are individuals that have an impact on us for a lifetime. Lee was one of them. It was an honor and privilege to serve with him and I am exceedingly grateful for that lifetime opportunity.  In my 82 years, closer to 83, I have met numerous individuals, but none who have stood the test of memories' time so much as my Captain. In private, as friends, it was Lee and Joe, but in public it was always Colonel. My respect and admiration will never diminish and our friendship will endure as long as life and our God permits.

From George Mavrakis:

WITH HEAVY HEART I SEND THIS MESSAGE TO YOU. THE COLONEL WAS JUST ONE OF A KIND. HE NEVER MISSED ANY MEETINGS AND WAS GUNG-HO FOR THE DETACHMENT TO BE SUCCESSFUL. I ALSO BELONGED TO THE SAME SIRS #39 THAT HE DID AND HE WAS CONSIDERED IN HIGH ESTEEM. WE CAN ALL TAKE A LESSON FROM THIS GENTLE MAN. WE MUST SUPPORT CAROL AND HIS FAMILY AT THIS POINT IN THEIR LIVES.

THELMA AND I SEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY AND CONDOLENCES TO BE PASSED ON TO THE WIMPEE FAMILY.

SEMPER FI GEORGE

From Lore Wiseman: God Bless the Colonel in his hard earned reward.

From Denny Weisgerber:

Colonel Lealon  C. Wimpee, USMC

           Lee, we will miss you immensely.  You are a true leader - A Marine of Marines - A gentleman and a true friend to all

 Your gentle ways, your loving heart, have been an inspiration to me from day one.

 What words does one use to describe this man? Hero? Friend? Patriot? Father? Husband? Marine?

 Yes all of them  - these and so many more words describe Colonel Lee Wimpee, my friend, and confident, MY HERO.

                    "Across the years I will walk with you;
                             In deep green forests, on shores of sand;
                                      And when our time on earth is through;
                                                In Heaven too, you will have my hand"

 On behalf of the entire San Jose Detachment of the Marine Corps League, we extend the original words from our beloved Hymn as a fond salute to you:

 Admiration of the Nation
We're the finest ever seen
And we Glory in the Title
Of a United States Marine

 Semper Fidelis Colonel,

 Denny Weisgerber, S/Sgt USMC (Ret)
Past Commandant Detachment 1122

From Kevin Kimma: Every one of us has lost a great man. I will share my last visit with the Colonel... After today’s MCL Detachment meeting I visited Colonel Lealon and Carol Wimpee’s home in Almaden Valley. I was greeted by their son and daughter, Charlie and Barbie; as well as Lealon’s sister and niece. Carol Wimpee brought me back to the Colonel’s bed. Lealon gave me a firm solid handshake.

 I removed my cover and guided the Colonel’s fingers so he could grasp the EGA on my cover and the Colonel said, “That feels good.” We talked about events that our Detachment is doing; the parade in Morgan Hill, the baseball game tonight, and the Spirit of ’45 event coming up on August 10th. When I told the Colonel he has three weeks to get ready before that August event, the Colonel said, “I’ll be there.”

 I told the Colonel that everyone in the Detachment is sending their best wishes and that we all miss him. We talked about Joe Dyer and the nice things that Joe spoke today in our meeting about the Colonel. The Colonel and Carol talked about their friendship with Joe for the past 56 years.

 Carol and family are doing a fantastic job with our Colonel. The entire time Carol was holding Lealon’s hand non-stop. God bless you Carol.

 Barbi took me on a tour of the house and showed me many of the Marine items that Lealon and Carol have in their house. I took pictures of them to share with you all. The first picture below is the Colonel’s shadow box that he and Carol put together. I am honored to be able to see it. The second picture below is a picture of the Colonel before he was a Colonel. What a stud! And the last picture is a table setting of items including a Korean War medal presented recently and the Wimpee’s Warriors banner. I also saw a picture of Carol when she was singing in a “big band”. Carol was as beautiful then as she is now. Later, Carol and the Colonel talked about how that was when Carol first met the Colonel. Carol said she was lucky to “get” the Colonel with all the beautiful girls that were around. I think the Colonel winked at me then indicating it he who was lucky!

 We talked about our meeting today and how everyone was wishing the Colonel well. I mentioned to him that my Chris was in OCS, and my Greg also has an invitation to OCS and that they will be commissioned, if all goes well, in about two years. I asked the Colonel if he would honor us by being there to see their commissioning. Again, the Colonel replied, “I’ll be there.”

 After about an hour I said goodbye to the Wimpee family, and gave the Colonel a salute. The Colonel raised his right arm and smartly returned the salute. I turned to leave and gave Carol a hug. I cried. Carol cried. Barbie cried.

 God Bless Colonel Lealon Wimpee, Carol and the Wimpee family.  Semper Fidelis...Kevin

In retrospect, I can assuredly say that the Colonel will be at the events I mention above...God Bless you Colonel...we miss you.

    God Bless you Colonel Lealon "Lee" Wimpee   Semper Fidelis
